Ecclesiastes
”Vanity of vanities! All is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 1:1).
Ecclesiastes is a transcendental argument against Idolatry. This means that Solomon stands in the shoes of the unbeliever for the sake of argument, and walks the unbelieving world-view to its logical conclusion. Then he looks at life from the believer’s world-view to demonstrate the necessity of faith in the God of the Bible.
If all you live for is what is “under the sun” then your life is meaningless, because you will eventually die and lose everything. On the other hand, if you live for God through faith in Christ your life is meaningful, because everything you have is understood as coming from God’s sovereign hand as a kind gift for you to enjoy. Ruth
“All that you say I will do” (Ruth 3:5).
In the book of Ruth the author’s agenda is to demonstrate that where the Israelites failed in the past (first, recalling the wilderness generation’s rebellion, and second, Judah’s relationship to Tamar) Ruth succeeded. The failure of the Israelites was a recapitulation of Adam’s fall. Ruth’s success anticipated the Messiah’s success. Download sermon audio here.
Esther
“... but they did not lay their hands on the plunder” (Esther 9:10, 15, 16).
The book of Esther is a recapitulation of the Old Testament theme of Messianic obedience. This means the author is casting a shadow of the obedient victory of Jesus Christ reflected in the person of Mordecai over his adversary, the Devil reflected in the person of Haman. Years before the events recorded in this book the ancestors of Mordecai and Haman, king Saul and king Agag respectively, fought. In that battle God tested Saul, who failed. Esther tells the story of Saul’s greater descendant, Mordecai, succeeding where Saul failed. In so doing, the author is reminding the readers of how the Messiah would succeed where Adam failed. The reader must either join the Messiah in victory, or his adversary in defeat. Download sermon audio here.
