“For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you” (Titus 1:5).
An Organized Religion!
We are a presbyterian church. Presbyterianism is the form of government established in the New Testament. It is grounded on two main principles. First, the church is governed by ordained officers referred to as elders (also called overseers in the New Testament) and deacons. Philippians 1:1 says, “To all the saints who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons.” In 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 Paul explains what the qualifications for elders and deacons are. Elders are responsible for governing the church, and deacons help the elders by overseeing mercy ministries. Second, local churches have standing governmental connections with other local churches for accountability. No church is an island. This is exemplified in Acts 15 when the regional church of Jerusalem had a governmental meeting with the regional church of Antioch. You may read more about Presbyterianism in our denomination’s Book of Church order. You can read it on line, download it in PDF files, or purchase a copy.http://opc.org/order.htmlhttp://opc.org/publications.htmlshapeimage_4_link_0shapeimage_4_link_1
